"Scrivens donates hearing aids to African children

Birmingham-based Scrivens Opticians & Hearing Care has donated 400 life-changing hearing aids to help hearing impaired children in Tanzania.

It brings the total given this year by the family business to more than 2,000 as it continues its longstanding support for a charity appeal.

Scrivens was the first business to donate to the Rotary Club of Birmingham initiative in 1998 and has carried on providing hearing aids for distribution to schools and clinics in poor communities in developing countries.

Rotarian Paul Wood, a retired estate agent from Stratford-upon-Avon, co-ordinates the appeal which also seeks support from hospitals and audiology centres. He has collected over 38,000 hearing aids to date and sends them to contacts established through Rotary’s international links to ensure they get to those in need.

Paul said: “Scrivens has been a fantastic supporter over the years and their help has made a real difference, especially to those children who are able to hear for the first time. This latest donation will go to an audiologist at a school for the deaf and hearing impaired in Tanzania.”

Martin Elwell, marketing manager at Scrivens, said: “We have given a long-term commitment to this project because of the impact it has in poor communities. We have donated end of line hearing aids, which have been superceded by better technology, to bring life-enhancing benefits to children.”

The public can also support the appeal by handing in any unwanted hearing aids which have been supplied privately at any of the company’s 180 stores in England and Wales"
